James Suckling Names 2013 Arrow&Branch Dr. Crane in Top 100

James Suckling has chosen his Top 100 Wines of 2016:

What a time to be a wine critic. I can’t think of many years more exciting to be one than 2016. We tasted more than 10,000 bottles…In a departure from last year’s emphasis on top-scoring value wines, we focused strictly on pure quality for this year’s Top 100….I believe that 2013 could be Napa’s greatest vintage. Napa produced rich and structured Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines…Wines like these will serve as reference points for wine lovers around the world and will be benchmarks for generations to come. In fact, we applaud all the 100 producers in this year’s Top 100 list…

  1. Arrow&Branch 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Beckstoffer Dr. Crane

97 points. Wow. Such character and style to this Dr. Crane with lavender, rosemary, flowers and sage as well as dark blueberries. Yet always reserved and focused. Full-bodied, ultra-refined and super long on the finish. A triumph. Drink or hold.

James Suckling chose his Top 100 Reds of Napa Valley 2016:

I couldn’t have picked a better time to create a Top 100 list for Napa than in 2016. What a year it’s been for America’s most famous wine region, as most wines I scored were from the glorious 2012 and 2013 vintages. I tasted about 1,000 wines from Napa this year over four different trips. JamesSuckling.com is committed to the region and its unique wines and fantastic terroir and microclimates. We believe in the future of Napa wines in both America and abroad, particularly in Asia where I spend five months working each year and have two full-time staff in Hong Kong. That’s why I also now live part of the year in St. Helena so that I can keep my hand on the region’s pulse….I tried to pick wines that excited me not so much for their flamboyance but for their beauty, complexity and balance. Drinkability, of course, is paramount and I think great wines are great from the beginning, whether from barrel or from bottle and through the years in the cellar….Napa is on a roll with a trio of great vintages and fabulous wines—and we look forward to spending even more time with these great wines.

2013 Napa Valley Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points

A wine with focus and precision. Plenty of black currant, chocolate and walnut aromas and flavors. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh finish. Better in 2018 but already impressive to taste.
